Lars Pederson Valheim (Lewis Vallem) burial

The son-in-law of Ole Olson Søndenå and Mari Iversdatter Nordskår, Lars Pederson Valheim (Lewis Vallem) died February 27, 1889.

Lars was buried at the Årdal gamle kirke (Årdal old church) in Årdal, Hjelmeland municipality, Rogaland county, Norway on March 6, 1889.

Here is his burial record from the Årdal local parish.   The entry for Lars is the second listing.

The fence surrounding the burial site is no longer there and the monument has been damaged.   The inlay inscription has been broken into several pieces.

Here are photos of the monument.  The burial plot is near the front entrance to the church.

"Lars P. Wallem, f. 11. Mr 1846, d. 27. Fr 1889" (is written on the stone) - er gravlagt ved den gamle kirken i Årdal - til venstre ved inngangsporten.  "Gaardeier i America" is too written on his stone.
Han er oppgitt i dødsmeldningene fra lensmannen (from the local sheriff) i Årdal i 1889.  Lars "levd i Amerika i manage år, kom hjem på besøk nu i vinter, skal eie land i Ogle county i Illinois".  Hans adresse skal være Creston, Ogle county.  "Etterlater kone Rakel Olsdtr. i Amerika, samt 7 barn."

"Lars P Wallem, born 11 Mr 1846 d 27 Fr. 1889" (Is Written on the stone) - is buried at the old church in Årdal - left at the entrance gate.  "Landlords in America" is too underwritten on his stone.
He stated in dødsmeldningene from the sheriff (from the local sheriff) in Årdal in 1889.  Lars "lived in America for many years, came home to visit now in the winter, to own land in Ogle County, Illinois."   His address will be Creston, Ogle county. "Leaves wife Rachel Olsdatter in America and 7 children."

Lars Pederson Valheim was born May 11, 1845 in Valheim, Hjelmeland municipality, Rogaland county, Norway to Peder Reiersen and Eli Osmundsdatter.    He was baptized June 29, 1845; the birth date on the stone is either damaged or was incorrect at the time it was written.

Lars Americanized his name to Lewis Vallem when he moved to the United States.    Lars married Ole and Mari's daughter, Rachel Olsdatter Finnestad on July 4, 1872 in Ogle county, Illinois.    It is unknown why Lars' burial plot is one of the few remaining at the Årdal old church and why it has such a prominent spot on the property near the front entrance.   Descendants believe he may have been a diplomat but there has been no evidence to surface which would confirm that belief.   If anyone has knowledge to these questions, please contact me.

Finnestad Farm - Stavanger, Norway

It was customary in Norway to take the farm name as the family name. Prior to arriving in America, Ole Finnestad was known as Ole Olson. According to the Regional State Archives of Stavanger, in 1862, Ole Olsen bought a farm from Bjørn Larsen. The following link provides some farm information along with the family members in 1865: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=59&filnamn=f61126&gardpostnr=582&sokefelt=vis “Merknad 387b” now means property nr. 16 of the farm Finnestad. (Please keep in mind that accuracy of records is less than perfect - so ages and other information are not always correct) For more information on Stavanger and a map of the area, please go to the following wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stavanger

Rasmus Oleson Finnestad family tree

I have completed cleaning up the family tree and added a final tab for Ole and Mari Finnestad's son, Rasmus. Six of Ole and Mari's eleven children produced the most descendants; the last 6 tabs include those six children and the two subsequent generations.  Here is a summary and links to the additional tabs: - Elizabeth Knutson - Iverdine (Dana) Travland - Rachel Vallem - Ole Finnestad (Jr) - Bert Finnestad - Rasmus Finnestad The family tree will always be available on the right hand margin for easy access. In the future, subsequent generations will be listed on a new spreadsheet to reduce any confusion.   The additional spreadsheets will be listed in the right hand margin below the original family tree.
