Elizabeth (Olsdatter Finnestad) Knutson - obituary

I have posted a few obituaries for Elizabeth (Olsdatter Finnestad) Knutson and found another from The DeKalb Daily Chronicle.    The obituary appeared in the March 19, 1930 edition, page 6 in the 5th column.

There are a few omissions in the obituary.   Based upon the 1900 US Census, Elizabeth had 10 children, 5 of which had passed away prior to June 12, 1900.    The 1910 US Census also stated that Elizabeth had 10 children and 4 had survived as of April 15, 1910.

The 6 children that proceeded her in death were:

- Anna Knutson, the eldest daughter.    I believe she passed away sometime after October 19, 1879, the date of her confirmation and prior to July 1884 when her younger sister, Annie was born.   It seems unusual to have named another daughter Anna.
- Clara (Knutson) Nelson, the third daughter born to Elizabeth and Ole Andreas Knutson.
- Olava Edvarda Knutson, the fifth daughter.
- Otto Bert Knutson, the sixth child and first son born to Elizabeth and Ole.
- an unknown 10th child died prior to 1900.

If anyone has information on the dates Anna and Olava passed away as well as birth and death information for the unknown child, please let me know.

The obituary mentions 2 of Elizabeth's siblings that had survived her, Rachel (Olsdatter Finnestad) Vallem and Mary (Olsdatter Finnestad) Bell.    The obituary omitted her brother, Rasmus Finnestad who was living in Everett, Snohomish county, Washington.

The siblings not mentioned that preceded Elizabeth in death were:

- Sarah 'Serina' Olsdatter Finnestad
- Maria Olsdatter
- Iverdine (Olsdatter Finnestad) Travland
- Bertha (Olsdatter Finnestad) Haaland
- Ole (Olson) Finnestad Jr
- Bert (Olson) Finnestad
- Barnel Olson Finnestad

Elizabeth was the daughter of Mari (Iversdatter Nord-Skaar) and Ole (Olson) Finnestad Sr.

Ole Finnestad Jr obituary

Here is the obituary for my great, great grandfather, Ole Finnestad Jr from the Dixon Evening Telegraph of July 9, 1928. Note the misspelling of his first and last name, though Finnestad was spelled correctly within the content of the article. You will also note that his brother Rasmus had moved from Canada to Washington by the time of his brother's death. Oddly, there is no mention of the sisters that survived him, leading me to believe they may have lost touch by the time of his death.

Kenneth and Lillian Finnestad obituaries

I have had previously posted the obituary for my great great grandfather Ole Finnestad several posts back. I have not yet been able to locate an obituary for my great grandparents Oliver and Mary Finnestad, though here are the obituaries for my grandparents, Kenneth and Lillian Finnestad.

Finnestad Farm - Stavanger, Norway

It was customary in Norway to take the farm name as the family name. Prior to arriving in America, Ole Finnestad was known as Ole Olson. According to the Regional State Archives of Stavanger, in 1862, Ole Olsen bought a farm from Bjørn Larsen. The following link provides some farm information along with the family members in 1865: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=59&filnamn=f61126&gardpostnr=582&sokefelt=vis “Merknad 387b” now means property nr. 16 of the farm Finnestad. (Please keep in mind that accuracy of records is less than perfect - so ages and other information are not always correct) For more information on Stavanger and a map of the area, please go to the following wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stavanger
